Our Nichols Chiropractor Discusses Cardiovascular Disease

If you're having chronic back pain, you might not realize that there's a connection between that and other problems like high blood pressure or an irregular pulse. Cardiovascular disorders can result from misalignment in the spine, especially those areas in the thoracic spine. Nichols Chiropractic, our chiropractor in Manhattan KS, would like you to know more about the connection between your musculoskeletal system and your heart health.

Two people joggingWhat Are Cardiovascular Disorders?

Heart disease can include circulatory problems and rhythm disorders – the rate and variability of the heartbeat. If the electrical systems in your heart aren't working properly, you might suffer from syncope, or fainting, which occurs when the heart doesn't beat because it doesn't get the right signal. Your heart muscles might be weak, which means your overall circulation suffers. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is another aspect of heart disease. High blood pressure can lead to kidney damage and stroke.

Cardiovascular Disorders and the Musculoskeletal System

Your skeleton supports and protects the body. Connected by muscles, ligaments, and tendons, it is part of an overall system that includes nerves and blood vessels. If the joints in the body are misaligned, they can put pressure on nerves and blood vessels, affecting the way they function. An irritated nerve can cause such problems as a too-fast pulse or high blood pressure. The autonomic nervous system (autonomic means you don't have voluntary control) affects the function of all major organs, including your heart. Skeletal misalignment, tight muscles, and restricted mobility prevent can you from exercising, which also affects heart health.

How Chiropractic Care Affects the Heart

A misalignment in the spine or other joints can cause problems beyond musculoskeletal pain. Chiropractic adjustment restores proper alignment and promotes better function. Chiropractic adjustments of the 1st vertebra, or atlas, can lower blood pressure. Spinal adjustments improve autonomic tone (overall nerve function). Costochondritis (rib misalignment) and thoracic misalignment can cause chest pain and breathing problems. Chiropractic adjustments can help both these conditions. In addition, chiropractic care can decrease heart rate variability and inflammation, lower the heart rate and improve lung function. Not to mention that it will help relieve your pain, and improve your mobility, strength, and flexibility.
