Headaches are among the most common ailments that people experience. Ninety percent of Americans experience headaches of some sort, and there are many ways people use to deal with them, from resting to taking medicine to just trying not to think about it. Two methods not everyone considers is spinal manipulation and iTrac® Cervical Curve Remodeling, two treatment options provided by chiropractors. These methods are most effective when the headache pain originates in the neck and as a result of chronic postural strain. The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics has reported on several cases where tension headaches, migraines, and other types of headaches have improved by treating them with chiropractic methods.

Tension Headaches Vs Migraines

Headaches can be minor to severe and can last for anywhere from a half hour to a week. There are many different types of headaches, but according to the Mayo Clinic, tension headaches are the most common and are usually triggered by muscle strain, stress or anxiety. With a tension headache, pain is usually felt on both sides of the head and may be especially uncomfortable on the forehead, near the temples, or at the back of the neck.

Migraines are often more severe, but frequently only involve one side of the head and may involve additional symptoms including sensitivity, nausea and/or vitamins, and a sensitivity to light.

With both types of headaches, it is common for the person who is experiencing them to reach for either over the counter or prescription medications to treat them. But increasingly, more people are discovering that chiropractic care in Manhattan, Kansas is a viable alternative that can relieve a good deal of pain and discomfort without the use of drugs.

Learning Headache Triggers and How to Respond

While headaches can be a warning sign to a bigger problem, the vast majority of the time the headache itself is the main concern. At Nichols Chiropractic in Manhattan, KS, our chiropractors are determined to identify they type of headaches our patients suffer from, so we can help them with whatever treatment is most likely to work for them. They may be caused by something in the person's diet or environment, from mild dehydration, excessive exercise, insomnia, lights, noise, general stress, or muscle tension in the neck associated with spending too much time in a single position.

Many headaches can be prevented or reduced in severity by getting up every half hour to hour to stretch, and by getting regular low impact exercise. Drinking enough water can also help prevent headaches. Clenching teeth, a common response to stress should also be avoided, because it can lead to a painful jaw condition called TMJ.

If you can't identify all your headache triggers on your own, a chiropractor may be able to help. With an assessment, we can get an idea of what may be causing your headaches and can develop a plan that includes spinal manipulation and other chiropractic adjustments. These treatments will likely be paired with nutritional supplements, exercise suggestions, including work ergonomics, and relaxation techniques that in many cases can prevent a large portion of headaches.
