Active Release Technique: The Fine ART of Pain Management

Manhattan chiropractor uses ART for pain relief.jpgHere at Nichols Chiropractic we employ a wide range of natural pain management tools and techniques to help our patients overcome acute pain or control chronic pain more effectively. But these aches and pains do not necessarily originate in a spinal misalignment or pinched nerve; sometimes they reside in muscles or connective tissues. We can address those kinds of pain too, thanks to methods such as Active Release Technique, or ART.

Soft tissues can become injured gradually or suddenly. While a car accident or personal injury might produce an obvious, acutely painful muscle strain or torn ligament, daily overuse of a body part can also produce a continuous series of micro-tears in the tissues.

These tiny, cumulative injuries can eventually lead to inflammation in the tendons or ligaments, as seen in such familiar overuse injuries as tennis or golf elbow. They can also cause scar tissue to build up at the injury site. Scarring is a natural part of healing, but if too much scar tissue collects in one place, the result is what we call an adhesion. Adhesions can immobilize tissues or even cause adjacent tissues to stick together, painfully reducing your range of motion and impeding the healing process. Active Release Technique allows us to detect and break up these adhesions and relieve nagging back pain, neck pain and other soft tissue pain.

Relief for Your Neck Pain, Back Pain and Other Discomforts

Our chiropractor is specially trained in the use of ART, which makes use of over 500 specific movements to pinpoint and treat tissue abnormalities underneath the skin. Specific degrees of tension and manipulation are applied to these points as the patient performs various moves under our supervision. This manual process allows us to free trapped tissues (including cases where nerves have gotten trapped as well) so your body can heal itself completely and move freely without pain.
