Lyme Disease Prevention With Our Manhattan, KS Chiropractors

Lyme disease: the words alone strike fear into the hearts of people who spend a lot of time outdoors. When it comes to this tick-carried illness, an ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure. Our functional medicine practitioners at Nichols Chiropractic in Manhattan KS want to help you keep yourself safe from Lyme Disease.

What Is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of the black-legged deer tick and commonly occurs in heavily wooded areas. Symptoms include a telltale bulls-eye rash at the site of the tick bite, inflammatory reactions, fatigue, autoimmune symptoms, and even neurological problems. Some people never notice any symptoms until they begin to experience problems years after they've been bitten.

Preventing Lyme Disease

Luckily, there are many things you can do to keep yourself safe from Lyme-carrying ticks. When you're in wooded areas, wear protective clothing and bug repellant that contains DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil. When you're walking on trails, walk in the center of the trail so that you avoid brushing against trees and bushes along the edge of the path. After you complete your hike, take a bath or a shower within a few hours. Before you get in the shower, have a friend or family member do a tick check- looking behind your ears, at your scalp, and at any other areas where you might easily miss a tick or tick bite.

Lastly, check your furry friends. Dogs and cats can easily carry ticks into the house. After spending time in the woods, carefully comb your pet's fur and remove any ticks that you find. It's a good idea to check your pets outside to avoid contaminating your home.
